Work Hard and Prosper
February 7, 2011
Distinguished members of the Dalhousie community, past and present, along with other honoured guests, recently gathered to celebrate the launch of the Clifford Rae Achievement Awards.
Clifford Rae’s mantra is simple: competition is good. Two principles he encourages — hard work and perseverance — are reflected in the new Clifford Rae Achievement Awards. Funded by an anonymous donor, the $1.5 million gift will offer annual scholarships to full-time students from Atlantic Canada with high academic achievement and financial need. The gift will provide nine annual awards to the top three eligible students in each class year — from a maximum of $5,000 for the top first and second year students, to $20,000 for the top ranking third year (graduating) student.
Rae understands the financial pressures on students and knows first-hand the difference scholarships can make in offsetting the costs of advanced education: he received scholarships as a law student at Dalhousie University and Harvard Law School. Rae has had an accomplished career as an oil and gas lawyer in Calgary and in work for the not-for-profit sector. He’s committed to helping students with their financial need. "Competition can bring meaningful reward,” explains Rae. “I want to give an incentive to students to keep pushing hard in school.”
